Alright, getting back into the swing of it with something a little fun and off-beat. We’re coming up quickly on E3, meaning we’re (hopefully) going to be enjoying some monster announcements from the biggest names in gaming. As someone who watches the event closely each year, I’m going to take some time to indulge some speculation (read: wishful thinking). Mind you, this is all pretty much baseless, though a few items may be found in some widely circulated rumors. I don’t want to give anyone the idea that anything I’m saying here is rooted in fact – just having some fun!
Let’s start this off with something that I think is on the “likely” side. Capcom’s Resident Evil 2 remake! We first heard of this back in 2015, and now it’s almost three full years later. I think it’s only fair we finally get some footage!
Roots of the remake
The idea of a RE2 remake has been floating about for years, beginning back with the first REmake on the Nintendo Gamecube. As a matter of fact, I feel gamers everywhere were under the impression we’d be seeing RE2 and RE3 in the same engine, but alas, it never came to be. It’s a shame, too, considering REmake REALLY holds up, with graphics that seemed almost impossible at the time it was released and a setting that still manages to instill fear in modern gamers. It took all the best parts of the original and made them better.
Personally, RE2 is a game that I’ve wanted to see remade for quite some time. It’s my personal favorite in the series (tied with RE4, perhaps) and introduced some of the series’ most iconic characters. Leon and Claire still remain faces of the franchise even years later and the “zombies rampaging through the city” motif has hardly been done better since. The original RE2 managed to take the same claustrophobic horror of the original RE and dramatically expand the scale. For me, both RE2 and Silent Hill 2 are the pinnacle of that style of survival horror gaming.
Modernize a classic
Much like the hotly-anticipated (slash pseudo-anxiety-inducing) FFVIIR, the biggest point of contention for a modern RE2 remake lies in the gameplay. We’ve seen Resident Evil change and evolve, for better (RE4, RE7) and (in my opinion) for worse (RE5, RE6). I’m not saying the latter are bad, rather that they don’t exactly embody the feelings that made me love the series. With that being said, I will be quite shocked if Capcom maintains a similar play-style to the original – I think it’s quite likely that we’re going to see this game re-imagined as a 3rd person or 1st person shooter.
Why? Well, to state the obvious, RE4 and RE7 have seen vast success with fans of the franchise and new players alike. Both offer distinct experiences while still holding fast to the survival horror core. They keep the action second to atmosphere, a formula that only adds to the urgency. RE2 is apparently being developed in the RE engine, which was made specifically for RE7, so we can be certain that it will look good. Perspective is a big part of this series, though, and I’m personally holding out to see how Capcom handles that.
I’ll be doing my best to post a few more write-ups like this leading up to the event, some being a lot further into the land of speculation for the sake of fun and discussion, but it seemed wise to start this off with something I think we can all hope to expect when the event hits.
As always, check us out on Twitter and join in the discussion! I’d love to hear your thoughts on what we should be looking forward to at the biggest gaming event of the year.
